VC2019 – Apprentice Application

Congratulations to our 2018 apprenticeship recipient, Kyle Jameson! Kyle Jameson is a leatherworker from Moorhead, Minnesota. His commitment to the craft, interest and skill with historically-accurate replicas, and record of demonstrating Viking Age leatherwork in public venues make him an ideal apprentice. Kyle will travel to Scandinavia in 2018 to study with a specialist in Viking Age leatherwork and focus on the broader aspects of historical methods of hide processing as well as manufacture of items such as turn-shoes, bags, and rawhide.

Our 2017 apprentice was Doug Swenson of Hawley, Minnesota. Doug has been a blacksmith since he was a child, and is currently the president of the Northern MN Metalsmiths. Eight years ago Doug began expanding his skill set by digging deeper into Viking Age blacksmithing, building a double-bellow forge, and participating in demonstrations in Iowa, North Dakota, and the Midwest Viking Festival in Moorhead, Minnesota. In October, 2017, Doug returned from near Kopparberg in rural Sweden after a 10-day apprenticeship under renowned Viking blacksmith, Götz Breitenbücher (https://gotzironworks.wordpress.com/
